The “social client” that I was talking about may be slowly simmering away in the new Flock 1.0 beta. Flock is a web browser built on top of Mozilla Firefox code specifically for the purpose of “being social”. I’d seen it before but dismissed it as another “me too” browser with a few gimmicky enhancements.
Honestly, if you take a look at Flock 0.9.1.3 (the current main branch download), it’s cool but not enough that I’m going to switch over.
Probably the coolest new functionality is the people browser. Connecting with Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube (what, no eBay love?), you can instantly grab a summary of what your friends are up to, regardless of their network. While I would of course like to see more services supported the concept of agnostic status is a good one. It’s already encouraging me to take a closer look at what my friends are uploading on Flickr, a site I usually never “check” for updates.
Come to think of it, Flock also has a built-in Flickr uploadr, so I’m off to do that for the time being. Test-Drive Flock 1.0 for yourself!
BTW, this post was also written in Flock and note the included photo… Something that I’d normally never do, but it made it so eaaasy.
